• This is an individual time trial, but with a team competition. It is open to riders who belong to clubs in the '32nd Association' (i.e. clubs which are historically from East London and who have one of the 'huts' as their country retreat, near Ugley in Essex, 32 miles up the road from London to Cambridge) - in addition to Lea Valley this includes Eagle, Shaftesbury, Victoria and a few others. Each rider gets their individual time, of course, but in addition to this the five fastest times from each club are aggregated and the club with the quickest time wins the team prize. Last year, for the first time in decades, we won the team prize. Here's a report from last September: http://leavalleycc.tumblr.com/post/61241494183/len-waters-25-mile-open-tt-saturday-14-september-2013

The race HQ is our place near Ugley - full directions here: http://leavalleycc.microco.sm/conversations/253853/#comment11781792

The route is a bit complicated (will post a description below), but there will be marshalls so you shouldn't go wrong.

The entry fee is £5 and you'll need to fill in a CTT entry form. You can download one here: http://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/Forms (click on the first file on that page, you will only need to fill in the first page - the second page is for hill climbs or team time trials (where you race together)). Bring the entry form along to a club night on a Tuesday to hand it in or to get help filling it in.

First rider is off at 3pm, last rider should be finished well before 5pm.

    Help us defend our title!

  • OK, the route:

First from the HQ to the start -
Turn right and head north on North Hall Road for about a mile till you come to a T-junction with the B1383. Turn right and continue heading north on B1383, up through the village Newport, towards a roundabout with the B1052. The start is just before this roundabout (i.e. south of it).

    Then the race itself -
Head north on the B1383, go past Audley End (stately home on the right), through the village of Littlebury (where the road bends to the right and then to the left), through the village of Great Chesterford (where the road does the same thing), up a long drag to Stump Cross roundabout. This should have marshalls. The first time you go there, you turn left on the B184 and then go straight over a series of three roundabouts in quick succession (these ones won't have marshalls). You are now heading north again on the A1301.
Next you come to the Sawston roundabout (which should also have marshalls). The first time you come here turn right (3rd exit) on the A505 and head north-east towards the A11. This is a busy and fast dual carriageway, but you don't really join it as such: you stay in the left hand lane all the time and your slip road which joins the A11 soon becomes a slip road immediately leaving the A11, taking you up to a big roundabout with the A1307 called 'Four Went Ways' (again, there will be marshalls here). You go right round this roundabout (4th exit) and start heading back where you came from. As before, stay in the left lane at all times and you've barely joined the A11 before you're on a slip road leaving it again and back onto the A505 heading south-west back towards the Sawston roundabout.
When you reach the Sawston roundabout (for the second time) you turn left and head south retracing your way over the series of unmarshalled roundabouts until you get to the Stump Cross roundabout (for the second time). This time you go straight over it (2nd exit) and head south-west on the B184 until you get to a roundabout just outside the village of Little Chesterford. Again, there should be a marshall here. Go right round it (4th exit) and head back where you came from all the way to Stump Cross yet again.
When you get to Stump Cross roundabout (for the third and final time!), turn left (1st exit) and retrace your route south on the B1383 down through Great Chesterford, Littlebury, past Audley End and down the hill to the finish line, just before (north of) the roundabout where you started from.

Clear as mud? Someone has uploaded the map as well: http://www.mapmyride.com/gb/saffron-walden-eng/e1-25c-route-22251588

  • Hi All, Have we had a start sheet yet. Mark

  • I think Mike Keen's doing it?

  • Well, in the absence of some of our fastest riders we didn't manage to retain the trophy - that's gone to Shaftesbury this year - but we beat Eagle to second place in the team competition. Alex was the fastest Lea Valley rider, knocking a huge amount off his PB (8 minutes???). I was his minute man and he caught me between the Hinxton and Sawston roundabouts before disappearing up the road. I found the traffic quite problematic - not just having to grind to a halt at some of the roundabouts (which can't be helped, it's just the luck of the draw), but an idiot in Littlebury deliberately braking in front of me over and over while laughing with his mate and then speeding off at 60mph when I tried to come round him. Chris found the course a bit confusing and took a wrong turn somewhere so his time is a bit down on last year. Monika won the women's prize. She had the pressure of having the other woman start one minute behind her, so she was determined not to be caught - she needn't have worried because she beat her rival by a massive margin.
    Lea Valley times:
    Alex Sweeting 1:04:10
    Jamie Fake 1:05:50
